Rachel Tsui Joining as Healthcare Partner at The Council
It’s no surprise that one of our key investment sectors at The Council is healthcare, given that it is a such a foundational and critical industry in our society. Healthcare, even with its complexities and challenges, has seen a disproportionate share of innovative founders seeking to change how healthcare is accessed, lower costs, and improve quality, with $10.1B invested across 497 digital health companies in the last year. Even with public sentiment of US healthcare at an all-time low, we are seeing so many passionate and smart founders still seeking to improve healthcare across the board.
At The Council, approximately 20% of our portfolio is in healthtech. Additionally, around 20% of our breakout companies have also been in the healthtech sector. These include companies like Daybreak Health, Rezilient Health (recently raised their Series A) and a stealth healthtech company that just successfully closed an oversubscribed seed round late last year after we invested earlier at pre-seed. These healthtech successes demonstrate the significant opportunities available within this sector, and something that we are continuing to double down on as a firm.
![]() Rachel Tsui, Partner | I'm delighted to announce that Rachel Tsui has been promoted to Healthcare Partner at The Council Fund. Rachel first joined The Council as an angel investor, co-investor, and diligence partner 2 years ago, and as Venture Partner earlier last year, where she has already had a significant impact on our healthcare investments. In fact, Rachel connected one of our stealth healthtech portfolio companies to their founding data engineer. As the former Head of Customer Success at Komodo Health, Rachel brings invaluable insights into leveraging healthcare data and technology to drive better outcomes. Her career experience has equipped her with valuable insights into building and scaling companies. |
She was the first customer success hire in a business unit that scaled from $1M to $40M in 3 years, the first sales ops role for a growing organization, and led a team of 35+ during a period of rapid company growth. This breadth of experience has given her a deep understanding of what it takes to build and scale companies, especially in the earliest stages. Additionally, her customer expertise has already been helpful to portfolio companies like Aster and Trially as they have been considering their initial customer success hires.
I am excited to grow our full-time investment team and also have Rachel’s operational prowess as we continue to grow our firm. This represents our dedication to healthcare as a part of our thesis after seeing promising early results in the category as an angel and in Fund I. With our tech focus and Rachel's healthcare expertise, we are well positioned to spot the healthcare companies that can become next-gen category winners. In her new role as Partner, Rachel will take on an expanded leadership role in driving our healthcare investment strategy and portfolio management. Her collaborative spirit and willingness to dive into the operational details with founders and within our firm will be instrumental as we continue to build a diverse healthcare portfolio and drive meaningful impact.
“Building in customer success and support is often a grind at the earliest stages, but so critical to the long-term success of a company. It can be even more complex given the diverse customer types within healthcare. I’ve seen that play out multiple times within Komodo and am excited to bring tangible learnings like how to make your first CS hire and lessons learned on scaling your CS team as the company grows to our founders at The Council,” says Rachel Tsui.
This promotion marks an exciting chapter in The Council's journey as we further strengthen our expertise in the crucial healthcare sector and build out our partnership. If you are building in healthcare or other essential industries, pitch us at The Council!
